2903 Community Service Self-Reflection

    1) Every person should help the community, but the challenge is how to do that. This is what we learned in this course which is community service. In the beginning of this semester we started to look for a place to volunteer in and choose the group we should volunteer with. My group and me we volunteered in ZHO which is stands for Zayed Higher Organization. It’s a governmental institute that helps kids with special needs from all ages with professional and trained staff.

2) At the beginning I had no idea about volunteering and I had a struggle in interacting with the students there. But with the time I used to them and to what I should do there with them. The best part of all this is when you do something to those students and you can see that this thing is really helping them to be a better person in the community, an example of that what we did in the National and Flag day, after we finished everything we saw the smile on their families faces that their kids can be a part of the community and this really gives you the best feeling ever.

3) Before I volunteer in ZHO I didn’t used to be that person who helps everyone and do things to them that change something on their life. But what I noticed that volunteering is actually can take the best of you and make it beneficial to the community, such as what we did on the preparation of National and the Flag Day. It took from us a lot of effort to teach the students and make them understand all the moves and what should they do.

4) In the end I would say that volunteering experience is one of most beneficial things ever,
because you learn too many things from it without your permission. From my side I got too many things out of this experience such as enhancing my abilities in interacting with those special needs kids and learn how to be an active member in the society. Out of this experience I think I got over of my struggles in interacting with people and I think this will benefit me in the future, it was a good and interesting experience to do and if I had the chance I will be more than happy to do it again.

Moanes: the difficulties I faced in teaching at ZHO at the first are that I had too much students from different capability and understanding.

Me: Can you please tell me a situation you faced in ZHO and it was hard to you?
Moanes: Actually there is lots of situation but most of them is with the kids that they don’t listen to me and crying all the time and screaming, but with the time when they see their friends they acclimate with them and start doing as they do.

Me: What do you think of the efforts that the government of UAE is doing for those kids?
Moanes: No one denies the efforts that the government of UAE are making, we really thanks them because they are here for us all the time in all of our festivals or any occasion.

Me: For a festivals like National Day or Flag Day how long it tooks you to make the student fully understand?
Moanes: Actually it depends on the nature of the festival if it’s important as National or Flag day it tooks from me to teach them about 3 weeks to a month. But for some small occasions inside the center it tooks about one week.

Me: Finally do you have anything to say?
Moanes: I would like to thank you teacher Mohsen for your supporting and helping me during this five weeks, hope you learned from my few experience. Also I would like to take all the thanks from ZHO management to your teacher ( Gregory) and the college your studying in.

Today we were with teacher (Ahmed) who is the teacher of the other class that were're volunteering in which is the deaf student's class. We learned with them some hand signs and believe me its not that easy even for the teacher himself cause as he said "When i go for a long vacation and come back to them i really need at least a week to make my hands reused to that language".
